"I think we are well advised to keep on nodding terms with the people we used to be, whether we find them attractive company of not. Otherwise they turn up unannounced and surprise us, come hammering on the mind's door at 4 a.m. of a bad night and demand to know who deserted them, who betrayed them, who is going to make amends." Joan Didion, "On Keeping a Notebook," Slouching Towards Bethlehem

Keep a notebook. Change your life.

Welcome to On Keeping a Notebook, where I hope you will find the inspiration and resources needed to charge and change your life through personal writing.

If you've found your way here through Instagram, my first Internet "home" where I began a gallery of images of my personal journals in 2014 with the intention of sharing my love of personal writing with anyone who would listen, then you've likely come to know me as @ninjatraveling. That community grew beyond my wildest dreams. As an educator and an advocate of self-efficacy and personal empowerment, I decided to find ways of making all that I know and continue to learn available to you. And so, here we are. Welcome.

The title "On Keeping a Notebook," was inspired by and pays homage always to Joan Didion, whose essay, "On Keeping a Notebook" in her anthology Slouching Towards Bethlehem, continues to inspire me. I've kept a notebook since I was nine years old, long before reading this essay as an undergraduate English student in the 80s; but, it wasn't until I read this essay that I understood my compulsion/need/desire/affection to and for writing in a notebook.

It is my hope to continue to inspire you to write and grow.
